Defender of the Fatherland Day

Grey Bees

Defender of the Fatherland Day enters the story through an old greeting card rather than a public celebration: Sergey Sergeyich discovers it in a delayed letter from Vitalina, a small sign that his estranged family has not stopped thinking of him. Its belated arrival makes the holiday a measure of both continuing affection and the distance separating them.

The card among delayed letters

While sorting through envelopes, Sergey Sergeyich recognizes that more than one has come from Vitalina. Their postmarks show that they have been waiting: one is dated December 16, 2015, another February 12, 2016, and a third bears a December date from the previous year. He opens two of them. One contains a greeting for Defender of the Fatherland Day 2016; the other offers New Year wishes and says that he can come to Vitalina and Angelica if anything happens.

The card is thus part of a sequence of attempts at contact, not an isolated message. The dates show that the greetings reached him well after they were sent, while their contents preserve a simple, practical invitation to seek help. The surrounding delay makes the ordinary holiday greeting carry more weight: the relationship persists in writing even when communication is not timely.

Family connection and uncertainty

The New Year card names both Vitalina and Angelica, making their shared concern explicit. Sergey Sergeyich pauses over the promise of help and cannot find an answer to the question it raises for him. The exchange registers his distance from them without suggesting that their invitation has been withdrawn.

The Defender of the Fatherland Day card gives that larger family connection a particular occasion. It is a conventional congratulatory gesture, but, arriving with the other overdue messages, it also documents an effort to maintain contact across separation. The story presents the holiday not through ceremony or public observance, but through a card whose belated arrival exposes the gap between sending care and receiving it.
